I once “cut the wrong board” on a maple drawer front, so now I slap blue painter’s tape on the keeper piece and write the final length in Sharpie right at the miter saw; that tiny pause before the cut has saved me more than once, though a simple story stick works too. Bonus: the tape peels off clean so I don’t confuse layout marks later.
