Quick ID trick for “mahogany” (the Kleenex of wood names): wipe a fresh end grain with alcohol and check a quartersawn face — heavy ribbon stripe points to Khaya/Sapele, not true Swietenia; then sanity-check density against Wood Database: https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/mahogany-names/. If it’s been stained, I plane a hidden spot and smell the shavings — sweet-spicy suggests Swietenia, more resinous/bitter leans Khaya; anyone still running into “Philippine mahogany” labels?
